In J.D. Salingers's The Catcher in the Rye, Holden is a teenager at the age of 16 years old. However, unlike most teenagers he frequently gets kicked out of school and decides to live by himself for a few days before returning home to his parents. He does many things during this stint. One of which is meeting a pimp and prostitute. He goes many places such as a museum, and ice skating with Sally Hayes. His journey relatively slow journey takes place in the massive city of New York. He is nothing like other adolescents. He isolates himself from the rest of the world, wants to remain a child, and has a goal of protecting other children from adulthood.
